Academy Support Assistant

Location:        Heartsease Primary Academy, Rider Haggard Road, Norwich NR7 9UE

Salary:        £9.50 per hour (pay award pending) (£13,961.67 pro rata; £18,525.00 FTE)

Hours:             32.5 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (i.e. term time plus 2 weeks)

Start Date:      1 September 2022

Heartsease Primary Academy is seeking an Academy Support Assistant to work in its school office, to start 1 September 2022.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team committed to improving the life-chances of children through education.  In this role, you will support the school’s teaching and educational support staff to make sure that our pupils get the high-quality education they deserve.  This is your chance to contribute to improving education in Norwich.

Heartsease Primary Academy is part of The HEART Education Trust.  You will work with the Academy’s current Academy Support Manager, but also be part of a collaborative working environment that expands across four primary schools. 

Ideal Candidate

  • A good level of literacy and numeracy
  • Grade 4-5/C Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent)
  • Previous administrative / secretarial experience, or experience in a school office
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults.
  • Work constructively as part of a team, understanding school roles and responsibilities and your own position within these. 
  • Identify your own training and development needs, and work to address these

About the Role

  • You will provide a high standard of secretarial, Information Technology and administrative services to the Academy its teachers and pupils and, by working flexibly with other administrative staff across the Trust, ensure that duties are carried out efficiently and effectively.
  • You will work 08:30 to 15:30 Monday – Friday with a half an hour lunch break
  • You will be given support by the Trust head office, Academy SLT and current Academy Support Manager
  • You will be given a high level of CPD and support for career development.

We are looking for experienced teaching assistants (must be prepared to undertake a Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning if not already obtained) passionate about special educational needs and inclusion to develop their career further in this area. The role of SEN TA will be working as part of the HEART Education Trust Teaching Support Team (based at one of our 3 academies), supporting the teaching staff in the delivery of quality learning and teaching of pupils with special educational needs.  The HEART Education Trust has a reputation for outstanding inclusion and SEND provision and we are looking for someone who shares our passion to join our team to enable us to continue to develop our provision.

We are looking for a passionate and proactive leader who is committed to helping our pupils succeed.  You will work with the Headteachers, Inclusion Team and other school staff, parents, pupils and outside agencies to ensure the safeguarding, behaviour and welfare of pupils across the Trust, under the instruction of the Head of Quality Assurance (Inclusion).  You will lead on Safeguarding matters across the Trust, prepare for and represent schools at CIN and CP conferences and keep staff aware of child protection procedures and any changes to Safeguarding statutory guidance.  You will establish and maintain effective links with external agencies, write reports, attend meetings and deliver staff training.

Your role will also include working with the Headteachers and the Inclusion Team to lead our team of Pastoral Assistants to uphold the Trust’s pastoral ethos and ensure the consistent implementation of The HEART Education Trust’s Behaviour Policy, achieving high standards of behaviour and pupil wellbeing across our schools.  As part of this role you will line manage the Trust Attendance Officer and the Family Support Worker to ensure outstanding attendance and high-quality support for all our families across our schools.

This is a non-teaching role that means all your time and energy can be committed to ensuring that the pupils are at the centre of everything that you do.  This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our Trust and to make a significant contribution to the educational outcomes for all our pupils. We are looking forward to appointing an inspiring individual who will continue the outstanding support for the pupils and contribute to the development of the Pastoral, Safeguarding and Inclusion Team.

You will also:

  • Have appropriate qualifications to the importance and seniority of the role (e.g. QTS, Social Work)
  • Have experience of working within a school environment
  • Have a thorough knowledge of Safeguarding and the statutory requirements and regulations referring to schools (e.g. DSL)
  • Have an understanding of Behavioural Principles relating to children
  • Have the ability to work in an organised and methodical manner
  • Have the ability to convey information clearly and accurately and maintain efficient record keeping systems
  • Produce accurate records and reports and analyse information to evaluate and implement effective plans in response

  • have experience of practising the Thrive approach in a primary school environment
  • be willing to undertake further training (as necessary)
  • have experience of using Scholarpack or other similar MIS software
  • have experience of working with parents and families of primary age pupils
  • have the ability to work in an organised and methodical manner
  • have the ability to convey information clearly and accurately and maintain efficient record keeping systems
  • be flexible and able to demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team
  • be enthusiastic and have a sense of humour
  • have good ICT, English and maths skills
